John B. Smith, 78, of Breese, died Thursday, July 9, 2009 at Breese Nursing Home after a short battle with cancer. 

Mr. Smith was born September 20, 1930 in Monroe, LA to the Late John M. and Inez (Richman) Smith; they preceded him in death. 

Also preceded in death by brothers, Kenneth W. Smith, Guy L. Smith, and Kerry Bruce Smith. 

He married Virginia Holten on May 1, 1954 at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church in Fairview Heights, IL; she survives in Breese. 

Also surviving are his children, John (Martha) Smith, Jr. of Mascoutah, IL, Anthony Smith of Olympia, WA, Virginia (Stephen) Wagner of Columbia, IL, Susan (Ray) Garriss of Wallace, NC, Michael (Kimberly) Smith of O’Fallon, IL, and Julieann Smith of Breese, IL; 10 Grandchildren-John Smith III, Kyle Smith, April Carlson, Patrick Sidener, James Diekemper, Katie Diekemper, August Wagner, Elliott Garriss, Eleka Smith, and Lana Nussbaumer; a Great-Granddaughter, Kylene Smith; sisters, Catherine R. (Travis) Upshaw of Burleson, TX and Florence D. Peters of Monroe, LA; and close family friend, Tom (Mary) Sharkey of Virginia. 

John was a former professional pitcher for the Pittsburg Pirates farm club, a USAF Veteran as a fighter pilot during the Korean Conflict and retired as a salesman. 

He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese. 

A Memorial Mass will be Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 10:00 AM at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese with Fr. Ben Stern officiating.  Interment will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, MO. 

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 14, 2009 from 4:00-8:00 PM and again on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 from 9:00-9:45 AM at the Moss Funeral Home in Breese. 

Memorials can be made to the American Lung Association and will be received at the funeral home.
