Dr. Charles S. Thorpe, DVM 85, of New Baden, died Wednesday January 21, 2009 at St. Joseph Hospital in Breese. 

Dr. Thorpe was born April 3, 1923 in Millerville, Alabama to Charles F. and Ella (Nelson) Thorpe; they preceded him in death. 

Also preceded in death by brother, J. E. Thorpe, Joe Thorpe; sisters, Agnes Catchings, Martha Merrill; and brothers-in-law, Otha Catchings, Carl Merrill. 

He married Frances Groennert August 8, 1954 in Nashville, IL and she survives in New Baden. 

Also surviving is a daughter, Dr. Charissa (Dr. Robert Klinsky, O.D.) Thorpe, O.D. of New Baden, granddaughters, Claire and Whitney Thorpe-Klinsky, and his beloved dog, Roxie. 

A sister-in-law, Chella Thorpe of Crossville, Al and a brother-in-law, Fred (Pat) Groennert of Trenton. 

Nieces and Nephews, Leanne (Steve) McDonald, John (Lisa) Groennert, and Tricia (Cory) Williamson all of Trenton, Ron Thorpe of Crossville, Alabama, and Carla (Jeff) McCollum of Acworth, Georgia. Numerous great nieces and nephews. 

After graduating high school, Dr. Thorpe served in WWII as an Army Combat Engineer, after returning to the family farm he decided to attend Auburn University, where he graduated as a Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine.

Dr. C.S. Thorpe, DVM opened his private practice in 1954 in New Baden and continued to practice until the fall of 2008. 

He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in New Baden, Alpha Psi Fraternity, 50+ year member of the Illinois State Veterinarian Association, American Veterinarian Association, Trenton VFW Post 7983, New Baden American Legion Post 321, a was a past member of the New Baden Lions Club.  He was an avid Wesclin Sports Fan. 

Funeral Services will be Friday, January 23, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Zion United Church of Christ in New Baden with Rev. Gretchen Sterrett officiating.  Interment will follow in Greenmount Cemetery, New Baden. 

Visitation will be Thursday, January 22, 2009 from 5:00-8:00 PM and again on Friday, January 23, 2009 from 9:00-10:30 AM at the Moss Funeral Home in Trenton. 

Memorials can be made to the Zion United Church of Christ Building Fund and will be received at the funeral home.   

The New Baden American Legion will hold services at 7:00 PM and the Trenton VFW will hold services at 7:30 PM both Thursday evening at the funeral home.
