    Captain William R. Schaub Jr., USAF (Ret.), age 81, of Aviston, dedicated his life to serving others through military and public service as a meteorologist, first with the United States Air Force and later with the National Weather Service. Bill passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 4, 2026, following a period of declining health.

     

    Born on August 19, 1944, in Schenectady, New York, Bill was the son of William R. Schaub Sr. and Marjorie Schaub (née Castle).

     

    Bill devoted his professional life to meteorology and public service. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1984, retiring with the rank of Captain after a distinguished 20-year career as a meteorologist. During his military service, he received numerous commendations for his forecasting work and his advance warning of hurricanes, tornadoes, and other severe weather events that helped protect military operations and the communities they served. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Bill continued his career with the National Weather Service.

     

    In addition to his career, Bill maintained an active lifestyle. He competed in Senior Olympics events, earning medals in running, the high jump, the javelin, and the shot put. He also enjoyed traveling throughout the American West, with the Grand Canyon and Arches National Park among his favorite destinations.

     

    Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William R. Schaub Sr. and Marjorie Schaub (née Castle).

     

    He is survived by his wife, Mary Schaub (née Ratermann) whom he married on July 10, 1992; his daughter, Linda Schaub Jeter (John) of Gardner, KS; his stepchildren, Michele Spring-Zimbelman (Mark) of Murphysboro, IL, Mark Kohnen (Trishia) of Germantown, IL, Matt Kohnen (Jolene) of Aviston, IL, and Maura Lee (James) of Murphysboro, IL.

     

    He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jessica (fiancée, Shaun Jabr) Spring, Christian (Brittany) Kohnen, Riley (Bryleigh) Kohnen, Alaina Kohnen, Jayme Lee, Dayton Kohnen, Elise Kohnen, Sierra Jeter, and Jeremiah "JJ" Jeter; great-grandchildren, Jack and Theo Jabr and Mateo Kohnen; brothers, Roy Schaub (Terri) of Salem, AL, and Kurt Schaub (Carol) of Leonard, MI; as well as extended family, friends, former colleagues, and fellow veterans.

     

    Visitation will be held Monday, July 13, 2026, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese, IL. Interment with full military honors will be Monday, July 13, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.

     

    The family extends its appreciation to the physicians, nurses, hospice caregivers, and all who provided care and support during Bill's final days.

     

    Bill will be remembered for his military service, his career in meteorology, his competitive spirit, and his appreciation for the beauty of the American West.

     

    In lieu of flowers, plants, or other gifts, memorials may be made to the Clinton County Humane Society and will be received at the visitation or by mail at Moss Funeral Home, 535 N. 5th Street, Breese, IL 62230, who is serving the family.
