    Joseph J. “Tony” Sommers, age 88, of Trenton, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on Friday, May 31, 2019 at Trenton Village.

     

    He was born September 1, 1930 in Breese, a son of the late Anthony J. and Rose Ann, nee Moss, Sommers.

     

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Lawrence Sommers, Loraine Higgens, Norma Wiebler, Florence Rogers, Betty Logsdon, Rose Marie Sommers, Richard Sommers, and Joan Marie Kohm; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Larry and Rosalia Huber; and his brother-in-law and sister-in law, Louis and Susan Huber.

     

    Surviving are his wife, Mary, nee Huber, of Trenton, whom he married August 20, 1960 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Trenton; sons, Mark (Cindy) Sommers of O’Fallon, MO, and Larry (Melissa) Sommers of Flower Mound, TX; grandchildren, Jacob and Amelia Sommers; brother Urban Sommers of Tulsa, OK; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jim and Dolores Powers of Florissant, MO.

     

    Tony was a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1947 to 1952; and he retired from National Steel in 1992, where he was a crane operator. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Trenton, Trenton Knights of Columbus Council #2932, Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Bishop Althoff Assembly #193, Breese American Legion Post #252, Trenton VFW Post #7983, and Granite City United Steelworkers Local #1899. He enjoyed taking care of his lawn and his house at the Lake of the Ozarks, boating, fishing, Budweiser, spending time with friends at Hank’s Bowl, and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.

     

    Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Trenton with Fr. Joseph Rascher presiding. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery in Trenton.

     

    Visitation will be Wednesday, June 5, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Trenton. Knights of Columbus Council #2932 Third Degree will hold their service at 10:15 a.m., followed by the Fourth Degree Bishop Althoff Assembly #193 chalice service.

     

    Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association or Wounded Warrior Project and will be received at the church or through Moss Funeral Home (105 S. Main St., Trenton, IL 62293), who is serving the family.
