Mary J. Pitt, age 78, of Breese, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2026, at her home. She was born June 22, 1948, in Breese, a daughter of the late Leander and Alma (nee Lunitz) Holthaus.
Mary married Donald J. Pitt on September 26, 1966, in Vandalia, and he preceded her in death on November 14, 2000.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Pam Pitt; father-in-law, Paul Pitt; mother-in-law, Eleanor (nee Mueller) Greer and her husband, John; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerald “Porky” Markus, Rosalie Walker, Wayne Pitt, Gloria Crosten, and Mary Pitt.
Mary is survived by her sons, Joseph (Carla) Pitt of Breese and Michael (Gena) Pitt of Dover, FL; grandchildren, Ashley and Jacob Pitt, Colton (Maggie), Olivia, and Kendra McGuire; great-grandchildren, Wrenlee, Lillyanna, Isabella, and Hank; siblings, Martha (Gene) Robke of Carlyle, Norbert (Sharon) Holthaus of Carlyle, Eleanor Markus of Aviston, and Joyce (Jerry) Brefeld of Trenton; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marilyn Pitt of Faribault, MN, William Pitt of Pawnee, and Paul (Janet) Pitt, Jr. of Beckemeyer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary retired at the age of 70 from Jim’s Formal Wear in Trenton. She was a faithful member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese, where she generously volunteered her time helping with the rummage sale, working chicken dinners, and putting together prize baskets for the annual church picnic.
In her spare time, Mary enjoyed working jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and baking and cooking were a big part of her life. Above all else, family was at the center of Mary’s world. She treasured the time spent with her sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and the memories they shared together were among her greatest joys.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese with Fr. James Buerster presiding. Interment will follow at St. Dominic/St. Augustine Cemetery in Breese.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 29, 2026, from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese.
In lieu of flowers, plants, or other gifts, memorials may be made to St. Dominic Church and will be received at the visitation or by mail at Moss Funeral Home, 535 N. 5th Street, Breese, IL 62230, who is serving the family.
