  • Full Obituary

Charles E. "Chuck" Schlarman, age 72 of Breese, IL, passed away peacefully in his favorite recliner on October 14, 2019. He was born December 14, 1946, in Breese to the late Carl and Dorothy (nee Kuhl) Schlarman. On July 24, 1969, he married Shirley Grapperhaus, and together they raised their three children, Michael, Jeana and Kevin in Breese.

Survived by his wife Shirley Schlarman of Breese; children, Michael and Duenne (Brown) of Holiday Shores, Kevin and Jeana Thole of St. Rose, Kevin and Rhoda (Wiseman) of Breese; grandchildren, Dean and Anna Schlarman, Claire and Lydia Thole, Shane, Katelyn, Wyatt Schlarman and Logan Wiseman; siblings: Herb Schlarmann, Jim and Kathy Book, Joe and Nancy Schlarmann all of Breese; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Bob Vollmer Of Highland, Pat and Jerry Voss of Breese, Beth Grapperhaus of Breese, Bob and Linda Grapperhaus of Shattuc, David and Bonnie Grapperhaus of Bartelso, Danny and Janet Grapperhaus of Nashville, Joe and Kellie Grapperhaus of Patoka, Gary and Deb Grapperhaus of Carlyle and Pam and Todd Loddeke of Breese; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Bernie Schlarman; sister, Linda Essington; sisters-in-law Jenny Schlarmann and Betty Vollmer; and brother in-law, Charlie Grapperhaus.

Chuck served in the Army and was stationed in the States during Vietnam. Following his service, he worked on the family dairy farm before taking a desk job with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. Upon his retirement in 2016, he was finally able to enjoy his true passions, which included caring for his pecan trees, wood working in his shed and helping others. Chuck was a Breese township trustee for many years, as well as a member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church Men’s Sodality, Breese American Legion, and the Illinois Nut Tree Association.

Quick with a smile and a kind word – and more than happy to chit chat about matters big and small – Chuck was always willing to lend a hand, be it driving friends and family here and there or pitching in to help where he was needed. His wife, children and grandchildren were the luckiest recipients of his love, and we will miss how fiercely he hugged and how tightly he held our hands.
