Donald L. Maue, age 83 of Breese, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2023, at HSHS St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese. He was born March 19, 1940, in Breese, a son of the late Joseph G. and Sophia Maue. He married Julia Ann Niebur, on May 10, 1960, at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese and she preceded him in death on June 3, 2016.
In addition to his parents and wife, Don was preceded in death by siblings, Ann (Eugene) Langhauser, Eugene (Mary) Maue, Harold (Vera) Maue, Gregory Maue, Joseph Maue, Aloys (Dolores) Maue, Irene Maue, and Bernice (Vincent) Huelsmann; father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Lillian, nee Wiekner, Niebur; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ralph Beckmann, Virgil (Dolores) Niebur, Rita (Stanley) Feldmann, Ray Haselhorst, and John Timmermann.
Don is survived by his children, Bradley (Michele) Maue of Breese, Denise (George) Timmermann of New Baden, Donna (Kevin) Heckenkemper of Albers, Cheryl Maue of St. Louis, and Angela (Douglas) Sabo of Carlyle; grandchildren, Paige (Jared) Kues and Blake (Ali) Maue, George William (Jamie), Jared (fiancée Justine Wasser), and Jenna Timmermann, Devin (Lauren), Alex (Denae), and Austin (Courtney) Heckenkemper, Lily (friend Jacob Claspille) Masterson, Mason Whiteside, Sophia (friend Joshua Schmitt) and Wade Sabo; great-grandchildren, Emilia Kues, Bryce, Caden, and Cameron Timmermann, Owen, Perry, Quinton, MaKenna, Brody, and Liem Heckenkemper; sister, Jeanette Beckmann of Germantown; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Maue of Breese; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Don was a dedicated public servant and community leader. He retired as the plant manager at PET Dairy in O'Fallon, leaving a lasting impact on the local industry. He served as a Breese City Councilman from 1975 to 1989 and continued his civic duty as the Mayor of Breese from 1989 to 2009. His unwavering love for the City of Breese and its residents was evident in his long and dedicated service.
Throughout his life, Don was an active member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and was involved in numerous community organizations, including the Breese Jaycees, Breese Knights of Columbus Council 2869, and the Breese Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Illinois Municipal League Board of Directors in 2001 and held the prestigious position of President of the Illinois Municipal League from 2005 to 2006. He was also a member of the U.S. Council of Mayors and played a pivotal role in the Illinois Tax Increment Financing Association, where he served as President in 2002. Don was particularly proud of his involvement in the Sesquicentennial Celebration of Breese in 2006 and his affiliation with the Concordia Saengerchor.
In his leisure time, Don enjoyed outdoor activities such as golfing, fishing, camping, boating, and deer hunting. He was also known for his fondness for cruising around Breese in his golf cart, where he would often pause to chat with friends and neighbors. However, his greatest passion was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and attending their various events and activities. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and community spirit that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese with Fr. Patrick Peter presiding. Interment will follow at St. Dominic/St. Augustine Cemetery, Breese.
Visitation will be Monday, September 25, 2023 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and again on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 from 9:00-10:30 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese.
The Breese Knights of Columbus will hold services at 6:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials may be made to ALS Association, Breese Knights of Columbus, or St. Dominic Catholic Church and will be received at the visitation or by mail, Moss Funeral Home, 535 N. 5th St. Breese, IL 62230, who is serving the family.
