Ruth Virginia Schmitt, nee Winkler, age 93, of St. Louis, MO, and formerly of Springfield and Trenton, IL, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2023 at Lansdowne Village in St. Louis.
She was born May 16, 1930 in Trenton, a daughter of the late Raymond and Marguerite, nee Cope, Winkler. She married Emil A. Schmitt, Jr., on May 24, 1952 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Trenton and he died June 23, 1979.
In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth was preceded in death by siblings, Mary Shepard, John “Jack” Winkler, Sr. Fran Winkler, OSF, Sr. Joan Winkler, OSF, and David Winkler; a son-in-law, Steven Maguire; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Emil and Mame, nee Drees, Schmitt Sr.
Ruth is survived by her children, Steven Schmitt of Manchester, MO, Virginia Maguire of Virden, Annette Schmitt of St. Louis, MO, Timothy Schmitt of Harvest, AL, Donna (Robbie) Robison of Springfield, and Susan (Matt) McManus of Sherman, TX; grandchildren, Sarah Maguire, Benjamin Maguire, Laura Maguire, Rachel (partner Richard Barth) Robison, Christina (John) Boushie, Melissa (JR Hutchens) Robison, and Brian Robison; great-grandchildren, Liam and Dakota Williams, Lilly and Louie Boushie, Natalie Robison, and Madison Trujillo; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Schmitt of California and Elizabeth Winkler of Wales.
Ruth's life was defined by her unwavering faith and commitment to her community. She was a devoted homemaker and formerly an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Trenton and St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Springfield. Ruth lived in Springfield for over thirty years and her generous spirit led her to volunteer regularly at Meals on Wheels, the Marion Center, and St. John's Hospital. Her compassionate heart touched the lives of many.
In her leisure time, Ruth found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a passion for completing crossword puzzles, creating beautiful needlepoint artwork, and delving into the world of mystery books. Ruth's love for music manifested in her ability to play and appreciate the piano, bringing harmony and joy to those around her. Her warm heart extended to animals, and she was known for her deep affection for her beloved pets, her dog, Gina and cat, Miss Kitty.
Funeral Services will be Friday, September 29, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Trenton. Interment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery in Trenton.
Visitation will be Friday, September 29, 2023 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Trenton.
