Frank A. Grawe, age 81, of Breese, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Flora Gardens Care Center. He was born on February 14, 1942, in Breese, a son of the late Henry and Theresa, nee Kleber, Grawe.
In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lawrence and Eugenia, nee Eilers, Ratermann, as well as his brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim (Joanne) Ratermann and Larry Ratermann.
Frank is survived by his devoted wife, Ruth, nee Ratermann, Grawe, of Breese, whom he married on November 26, 1964, at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese. He is also survived by his loving children, Michael Grawe of Belleville and Stacey Grawe of Breese; former daughter-in-law, Cheryl Sauer of Edwardsville; cherished grandchildren, Raegan and Andrew Grawe; siblings, Tom (Barb) Grawe of Breese, Mary Ann Huelsmann of Trenton, and Agnes (Butch) Wellen of Highland; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Judy Ratermann of Breese and Donna (Ed) Rolfingsmeyer of Aviston, along with nieces and nephews.
Frank proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War (1964-1966). Following his military service, he embarked on a 41-year career as a meat cutter at Behrmann Meat and Processing in Albers before his well-deserved retirement. He was an active member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese, contributing his time and skills to numerous church events, including picnics and chicken dinners.
Beyond his professional life, Frank found joy in various hobbies. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed cutting wood, and took pleasure in meticulously waxing his vehicles. During the Christmas season, he delighted in showcasing his classic Lionel Train set. A fan of wrestling, Frank was known for his quiet demeanor but was always ready to lend a helping hand, willing to give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. However, his greatest source of happiness was spending quality time with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren.
Memorial Mass will be Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese with Fr. Patrick Peter presiding. Interment with full military honors will follow at St. Dominic/St. Augustine Cemetery, Breese.
Visitation will be Saturday, December 2, 2023 from 9:00-10:45 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese.
In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and will be received at the visitation or by mail, Moss Funeral Home, 535 N. 5th St. Breese, IL 62230, who is serving the family.
