Herbert F. “Herb” Schulte, age 83, of Trenton, passed away Monday, August 19, 2024, at HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese. He was born September 29, 1940, in Breese, a son of the late Edward “Butch” and Mary, nee Dall, Schulte.

Herb married the love of his life, Germaine Toennies, on June 22, 1965, at St. Damian Catholic Church in Damiansville. They shared 58 wonderful years together. Germaine survives him in Trenton. Herb was a proud and devoted father to his children, Steven (Jean) Schulte of Breese, Christine (Ken) Toenjes of Millstadt, and Scott (Alicia) Schulte of Aviston. He was the cherished grandfather of Rachel and Kalee Schulte, Cameron and Kyle Toenjes, and Madison and Hailey Schulte.

He is also survived by his siblings, Phyllis (Tom) Heiderscheidt of Clearwater, FL and Tom (Barbara) Schulte of Brenham, TX. His extended family includes sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Carolyn Schulte of San Jose, CA, Marie (Greg) Niemeyer of Breese, Bernice "Bim" (Frank) Fuehne of Damiansville, Gerald (Sharon) Toennies of Waterloo, Jan (Tom) Eversgerd of Germantown, Bernette Toennies of Germantown, Rita Toennies of Damiansville, and Jane Toennies of Breese.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Edward "Sonny" Schulte and Mary Jane Weilmuenster; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Margaret (nee Santel) Toennies; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Emma Toennies, Lucille "Lu" (Henry "Jitter" ) Albers, Alvin Toennies, Cletus Toennies, Walter Toennies, Joseph Toennies, Norman Toennies, and Julie Toennies.

At the age of 17, Herb enlisted in the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country by fighting fires in North Dakota. After his four-year military service, he returned to Aviston, where he met Germaine and began their journey together. Herb worked alongside his father at Sears Roebuck & Co. in E. St. Louis, selling sewing machines and vacuum cleaners. When Sears closed, Herb transitioned into a successful career in insurance, first with Prudential and then as an independent agent, working in the industry for over 30 years.

Herb’s passions were many. He loved spending time with family and friends, and his adventurous spirit kept him constantly planning his next trip. He never met a stranger and enjoyed lively conversations with anyone willing to engage. Herb had a love for fishing, hunting, gardening, Chicago Cubs baseball, and tinkering with anything in need of repair. He also enjoyed gambling at the casino and horse races and was always ready for a Crown Royal & Coke. His beloved dogs, Patches and Ginger, were constant companions. Herb passed on his love for these hobbies to his children and grandchildren.

Herb was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Aviston and the Trenton Knights of Columbus Council 2932.
