    Virgil J. Gebke, age 91, of Germantown, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at the Breese Nursing Home. Born on August 24, 1932, in Bartelso, Virgil was the son of the late Isidore Sr. and Mary (née Boeckmann) Gebke.

     

    Virgil is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Marie (née Albers) Gebke, whom he married on May 21, 1957, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Germantown. Virgil was the cherished father of Daniel (Lynn) Gebke, Marvin (Dana) Gebke, Glennon (Wanita) Gebke, Ronald (Patricia) Gebke, Colette (Thomas) Hitpas, Gary (Ladawn) Gebke all of Germantown and Jason (Nicole) Gebke of St. Jacob. He was a proud and loving grandfather to 28 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren whom he loved and adored dearly.

     

    Virgil is also survived by his sisters Rita Toennies of Damiansville, Florence Balog of Salem, OR, Margaret (William) Mikko of House Springs, MO and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Maurice (Rita) Albers of Germantown along with many loving nieces and nephews.

     

    In addition to his parents, Virgil was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Barbara Gebke; siblings, Isidore (Elizabeth) Gebke Jr & Dorothy Loepker and his brothers and sisters-in-law Alvin Toennies, Steve Balog, Lawrence (Gertrude) Becker, Adele Albers, Clarence (Elizabeth) Haake, August (Delores) Lampe, Vincent J. (Ethel) Albers & Harold Albers, as well as his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Vincent W. and Catherine (née Winter) Albers.

     

    A Korean War veteran of the United States Army, Virgil was a lifelong member of the American Legion. He was retired from the General Motors Truck Assembly Plant in St. Louis where he worked for 34 years. He was an avid fisherman & hunter and treasured camping and traveling with his beloved wife. He also loved playing cards and games with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Virgil was also a devoted member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Germantown.

     

    Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, August 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Germantown with Fr. James Buerster presiding. Interment with full military honors accorded will follow at St. Boniface Cemetery.

     

    Visitation will be Sunday, August 25, 2024, from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. and again Monday, August 26, 2024, from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Germantown.

     

    In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials may be made to the St. Boniface Cemetery Fund, Mater Dei Catholic High School or the wishes of the family (checks payable to Colette Hitpas) and will be received at the visitation or by mail, Moss Funeral Home, PO Box 117, Germantown, IL 62245, who is serving the family.
