- Full Obituary
Matthew Gerard “Blue” Schumacher, age 67, of St. Rose, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2026 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese. He was born June 15, 1958, a son of Clarence and Lidwina (nee Fischer) Schumacher of St. Rose, IL.
Matt is survived by his mother, Lidwina Schumacher; his siblings, Mike Schumacher, Marian (Patrick) Netemeyer, Martin (Karen) Schumacher, Russ Schumacher, Rob (Kathy) Schumacher, Rita (Rick) Ratermann, Raphael (Eleanor) Schumacher, and Carol (Kurt) Gajewski; his nieces and nephews, Andrea Thomas (Jeff Birlew), Emily (Sterling) Mrazek, Ben Netemeyer, Seth (Heather) Netemeyer, Sarah (Ted) Eckelkamp, Carrie (Hugo) Nieto, Paul Schumacher, Brian (Alison) Schumacher, Ethan Schumacher, Lauren Schumacher, Grant Schumacher, Carissa (Luke) McGowan, Kirsten (Brennan) Wilde, Clint (Meg) Ratermann, Kara (Levi) Brening, Andrew Gajewski, and Lydia Gajewski; and many great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Schumacher, and his nephew, Sam Schumacher.
Matt attended St. Rose Grade School and graduated from Mater Dei Catholic High School in 1976, where he played tuba in the marching band. He worked alongside his family at Blue Mound Dairy farm in St. Rose. His work experiences included time at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Etheridge Sporting Goods, Rehkemper Truss, and Markus Cabinet.
For 36 years, Matt was a dedicated employee of Netemeyer Engineering, where he became a trusted building designer serving agricultural, commercial, and industrial clients throughout the region. He developed long-standing relationships with the farmers, contractors, and business owners who depended on him to design practical, durable structures- dairy barns, poultry facilities, warehouses, fire stations, and other working buildings. His work reached as far as Deadwood, South Dakota, and as close to home as the St. Rose Development Club building.
He began his career in drafting and land surveying, and was an early adopter of computer-aided drafting in the late 1980’s. Matt took genuine pride in his work. He found satisfaction not merely in completing drawings, but in seeing projects built and knowing they fulfilled a purpose.
Matt was a member of St. Rose Parish, Clinton County Farm Bureau, and a past member of the Albers Jaycees. He played Slo-Pitch Softball for Gettse Place and Wellen TV and participated in many golf outings with friends.
Matt enjoyed Sunday afternoons at Aviston Park watching Clinton County baseball and Friday evenings gathered with family and friends at the clubhouse along Shoal Creek. He will be remembered for his steady presence, his quick wit, his work ethic, and his devotion to those he loved. Above all, he was a beloved son, brother, uncle, colleague, and friend to many.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday February 23, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church in St. Rose with Fr. Edward Schaefer presiding. Interment will follow at St. Rose Cemetery.
