Harold Eugene Meskil, age 91, of Pierron, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2026, at HSHS Holy Family Hospital in Greenville.

Harold was born on February 22, 1935, in Alhambra Township, a son of the late William “Bill” and Irene (nee Voudrie) Meskil. He was raised on a farm in Tamalco, IL.

On September 23, 1958, he married Marilyn M. Schultz, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland, she survives in Pierron.

Harold is also survived by his children, Darwin (Donna) Meskil of Highland, Denise (John) Haegele of Marine and Darin Meskil; grandchildren, Darla (Shawn) Rose, Derek (Karla) Meskil, Jacqueline Haegele, Nick Meskil and Alivia Meskil; great grandchildren, Alexie Rose, Payton & Barrett Meskil and Ariel & Sebastian Meskil; step great grandson, Carson (Ashley) Talleur; step great great grandson Garrett Talleur; sister, Joyce Quigley.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Douglas Meskil; siblings, Oliva Meskil(infant), Wilfred Meskil, William Meskil, Edgar Meskil, Dolores Blankenship, Lucille Hiem, Estelle Sidwell, Shirley Meyer, Gerald Meskil, Clifford Meskil and Verlin Meskil; parents-in-law, Clarence and Lucilda (nee Bellm) Schultz; sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine Buehne, Ronald Schultz and Karen Meskil.

Harold was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who lived a life defined by hard work, community service, and an enduring love for his family and the great outdoors. He passed away leaving behind a legacy of dedication, warmth, and countless cherished memories.

Harold was a man of remarkable work ethic and commitment. For 43 years, he worked as a forklift operator and served as a dedicated Union Steward for Jefferson Smurfit (Highland Box Board). His commitment to his fellow workers was also reflected in his membership with the Local 1215 United Paperworkers Union.

In addition to his career, Harold was a talented craftsman who owned and operated his own upholstery business for 57 years, a testament to his skill and entrepreneurial spirit.

Harold’s faith and community were central to his life. As a faithful member of the Immaculate Conception Church, he gave back in many ways, serving as an usher and happily volunteering his time to help with the church's chicken dinners. He was also an active member of the Pierron Improvement Club, always willing to lend a hand to better his community.

An incredibly active man, Harold loved being outdoors. He was an avid motorcyclist and a member of the Riverbend Gold Wing Touring Association, exploring the country on his Honda Gold Wing. Whether he was cutting grass, tending to his garden, riding four-wheelers, or talking about farming and classic cars, Harold found joy in the simple pleasures of life. In his younger years, he could often be found water skiing, a passion that evolved into a lifelong love for camping and boating.

Above all, Harold loved his family. He was happiest when spending time with his family, especially playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passing down stories of the "good ole days." In his quieter moments, Harold was a talented artist who enjoyed drawing, putting together model cars, and gathering around the table to play cards with family and friends. His infectious storytelling, devotion to his loved ones, and vibrant spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Highland and Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m., with Fr. Callistus Osiaga presiding at Immaculate Conception Church in Pierron. Interment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, plants, or other gifts, memorials may be made to H.I.S. Kids (Highland) or Immaculate Conception Church and will be received at the visitation or by mail at Moss Funeral Home, 1501 9th St., Highland, IL 62249, which is serving the family.
