- Full Obituary
Joan Valentine (Millar) Fulbright, age 82, died on Monday, April 29, 2019 in the caring and loving community of Cedarhurst Senior Living with her children by her side. From her birth in London, England on August 19, 1936 to her death on Monday, she nourished all around her with love, joy, and art.
“Joanie,” as her mother called her, was born in London to William Davidson Millar of Arbroath, Scotland and Rose Beatrice Mae (Harbud) Millar of London, England and was the youngest of two children. In her early childhood, she resided in Camden Town near Regents Park, London. Because of threatening bombing raids of imminent WWII, she and her sister were sent out to Luton, England for their safety. When her father, a British Royal Navy Engineer, was assigned to Malta, he took the family with him. After Malta, they relocated to the outskirts of London, as their home in Camden had been bombed. In her late teens, Joan, though desiring to be a dress designer, was hired instead as a model for Nettie Vogue London where she acquired her nickname “Terry.” In Terry’s words, “Ms. Nettie was frustrated with having too many employees with the name Joan, so she called me Terry.”
Terry met Dr. James Stephen Fulbright in Margate, England, who at the time was an Air Force Intelligence Officer stationed at Dover AFB, England. She moved to the United States where she and “Steve” married and began a family in St. Louis, MO. Then, they moved to Reading, England and later to Columbia, MO, where she lived for most of her life. There she became a successful self-taught real-estate investor. Terry enjoyed and created beautiful drawings and paintings, and loved gardening, yorkies, and traveling to spend time with her children and grandchildren.
Left to honor Terry and remember her love are Terry’s four children, Suzann (Suzie) Fulbright, Karen Fulbright-Hightower m. Daniel Hightower M.D. (Exeter, CA), James (Jim) Fulbright II m. Krista Mick (Platte City), and Christine Fulbright-Foppe m. John Foppe (Breese, IL); seven grandchildren, Lauren Hightower, Heather Hightower, Elisha Hightower, Evan Fulbright Hightower, Brooke Adamek m. Alex Adamek, Erika Fulbright, Faith Foppe; one great-grandchild, Alma Adamek; and niece Diane and nephews Russell and Jay.
Terry was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Sylvia. Terry will be remembered as a bright, shining light in various communities.
