Henry G. "Red" Hoerchler, Jr., age 77, of Breese, passed away Sunday, October 31, 2021 at HSHS St. Elizabeth's Hospital in O'Fallon.
He was born December 6, 1943 in Breese, son of the late Agnes, nee Hilmes, and Henry G. Hoerchler, Sr.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Eileen, nee Blackburn, Hoerchler; son-in-law Troy Crocker; brothers, Donald Hoerchler, Robert Hoerchler, and Daniel Hoerchler; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Virgil and Leonarda, nee Rosen, Wempe; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Martha Hoerchler, David Wempe and Dwang Wempe.
Red is survived by his wife, Mary Louise, nee Wempe, Hoerchler, of Breese, whom he married on January 8, 1966 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese; children, Lisa Hoerchler of Lebanon, Michele (friend Tom Schulte) Athmer of Breese, Krista (Bryan) Gonzalez of Breese, and Jaime (Ricky) Gonzales of Breese; grandchildren, Ryan (Lauren) Athmer, Kendra Athmer, Maddyson (friend Tyson Thole) Athmer, Cortney (Kyle) Walker, Chelsea (friend Keegan Anderson) Crocker, Trenton Rush, Evan Tibbs, and Trinity Gonzales; great-grandchildren, Carter Schrage, Tatum Walker, and Karsyn Anderson; sister, Kathy Ruff of Centralia; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Cindy Hoerchler of Breese and Virgil “Sonny” Wempe, Jr. of Bossier City, LA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Red was a veteran of the United States Army. He worked for General Motors in St. Louis, MO and then transferred to the Bowling Green, KY plant where he retired in 1997. He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese, former Sergeant at Arms for the Breese American Legion Post 252, Breese American Legion Post 252 Hall Manager for 19 years, Sons of the American Legion, St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, and Breese Historical Society. Red enjoyed Breese Junior Legion Baseball, his tomato garden, playing cards, fishing, and spending his time with family and friends.
Funeral Service will be Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese with Deacon Linus Klostermann officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at St. Dominic/St. Augustine Cemetery in Breese.
Visitation will be Thursday, November 4, 2021 from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese.
In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials may be made to Breese Junior American Legion Baseball or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and will be received at the funeral home or by mail, Moss Funeral Home 535 N. 5th St. Breese, IL 62230, who is serving the family.
