Albin "Bones" Toennies, age 85, of Damiansville, passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 15, 1938, in Damiansville, a son of the late Albert "Bert" and Mary, nee Heimann, Toennies. Bones married Darlene Breiner at St. Damian’s Catholic Church in Damiansville May 30, 1963, and she resides in Damiansville.
In addition to his wife of sixty years, Bones is survived by his children, Brian (Mona) Toennies of O’Fallon, IL, Wayne (Angie) Toennies of Bartelso, Carol (Ryan) Winkeler of Germantown, and Lori (Lonnie) McMinn of O’Fallon, IL; grandchildren, Eric (Ashlyn), Zachary and Jack Toennies; Alex (Kristen), Nick, Katie, and Noah Toennies; Brett & Justin Winkeler; and Alyssa, Briana and Kiley McMinn; and great-granddaughter Nora Toennies. siblings, Alfred Toennies, Ange Wobbe, Melvin & Alice Toennies, and Darlene & Rich Toennies all of Damiansville; sister-in-law Betty Santel of Damiansville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bones was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law & mother-in-law Emil & Frieda, née Billhartz, Breiner; his siblings, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Pat Toennies, Delores “Dot” & Chuck Goestenkors, Louis Wobbe, Tom Toennies, Marilyn & Ed Fiedler, Lavergne & Julie Breiner and Frank Santel.
Bones graduated from Aviston high school in 1956 and attended Ranken Technical School. He started and managed Toennies Dairy Equipment for over 40 years where he proudly served the local farmers. He was an Army Reserves veteran and a proud blood donor. He was a faithful member of St Damian’s Church, St Damian’s adult choir, St Damian’s Holy Name Society, Damiansville Development Club, Albers / Damiansville American Legion Post 1026, and Albers / Damiansville Knights of Columbus Council. He enjoyed playing softball, fishing and hunting in his younger years. He also enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and spending time with family at Boot Hill. Later in life, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their various activities. In recent years, due to mobility issues, you could find Bones on his couch watching the Cardinals, Mater Dei Basketball or the Game Show Network.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 30, 2024 from 9:00 – 11:45 a.m. at St Damian’s Catholic Church in Damiansville with a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 with Fr. Matthew Elie celebrating and Deacon Glenn Netemeyer assisting. Interment will follow at St. Damian’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials may be made to St. Damian’s Parish, Mater Dei High School or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be received at the visitation or by mail, Moss Funeral Home, PO Box 117, Germantown IL 62245, who is serving the family.
