    Alfred F. Toennies, age 90, of Damiansville, passed away Thursday, August 15, 2024, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He was born May 10, 1934, in Damiansville, a son of the late Albert and Mary, nee Heimann, Toennies.

     

    In addition to his parents, Alfred was preceded in death by his loving wife, Patricia Ann “Pat” Toennies, whom he married November 28, 1957, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Bartelso and who died June 1, 2023; daughter, Karen Toennies; sons, Randy Toennies and Mark Toennies; former son-in-law, Chris Condellire; siblings, Dot (Chuck) Goestenkors, Tom Toennies, and Albin “Bones” Toennies; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry and Frances, nee Trame, Wilken; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Louis Wobbe, George Harshaw, Joanne (Butch) Gawlik, Charlie (Joyce) Wilken, and Bob Wilken.

     

    Alfred is survived by his children, Ellen (Richard) Crain of Caseyville, Kathy Condellire of Columbia, and Beth (David) Stites of Waterloo; daughter-in-law, Terry (Marvin) Linton of Carlyle; grandchildren, Heath (Sarah) Toennies, Toby (Mallory) Toennies, Brian Crain, Daniel (Chelsea) Crain, Brent (fiancée, Hartney) Crain, Jordan Stites, and Ryan Stites; great-grandchildren, James, Elizabeth, and Emma Toennies and Lucas, Afton, and Anna Toennies; siblings, Ange Wobbe and Melvin (Alice) Toennies, both of Damiansville; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Darlene Toennies of Damiansville, Darlene (Rich) Toennies of Damiansville, Barb Harshaw of Maryville, Mary Kay (Jerry) Winkeler of Glen Carbon, David (Vicki) Wilken of Trenton, Bill (Pat) Wilken of Trenton, Donna (Bill) Book of Trenton, and Susie (Denny) Diehl of Belleville.

     

    A veteran of the United States Army, Alfred honorably served his country during the Korean War. He was a proud graduate of Ranken Technical College and the owner and operator of Toennies Service Company in Damiansville for over 40 years. His commitment to his community was evident through his membership in St. Damian Catholic Church, St. Damian’s Holy Name Society, the Albers American Legion Post 1026, and his past presidency of the Damiansville Chamber of Commerce.

     

    Alfred was a man of many passions. He was an avid fisherman and a devoted Cardinals Baseball fan. He found joy in hunting, camping, woodworking, and country music. In his younger years, he enjoyed participating in bowling leagues and traveling to Branson. Above all, he treasured the time spent with his family at Boot Hill Clubhouse.

     

    Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Damian Catholic Church in Damiansville with Fr. Matthew Elie presiding and Deacon Glenn Netemeyer assisting. Interment will follow at St. Damian Cemetery with full military honors accorded.

     

    Visitation will be Tuesday, August 20, 2024, from 8:30 – 11:15 a.m. at St. Damian Catholic Church in Damiansville.

     

    In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials may be made to Randy Toennies Memorial Scholarship Fund at Mater Dei Catholic High School or to St. Damian Catholic Church and will be received at the visitation or by mail, Moss Funeral Home, 535 N. 5th St. Breese, IL 62230, who is serving the family.
