Darlene C. Toennies, age 76, of Damiansville, passed away Friday, May 23, 2025, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 1, 1949, in Breese, a daughter of the late Mildred (nee Wildhaber) and Herman Wegmann, Sr.
Darlene married her first husband, Thomas Toennies on August 8, 1970, in Damiansville and he preceded her in death on May 21, 1991. Darlene married Rich Toennies on May 2, 1998, at St. Damian Catholic Church in Damiansville and he survives in Damiansville. In addition to her husband Rich, Darlene is survived by her sons, Bob (Tammy) Toennies and TJ (Amber) Toennies, all of Damiansville; son-in-law, Allen Netemeyer of Albers; grandchildren, Nathan (Amber) Toennies, Jayson Netemeyer, Dakota Walker, Heather Toennies, Kaylee Netemeyer, Gavin Netemeyer, Katherine Whited, Hunter Toennies, Reid Toennies, and Alexis Toennies; great-grandchildren, Arik, Dean, Ilona, and Autumn Toennies, and Autumn Abberley; brother, Herman (Michelle) Wegmann, Jr. of Damiansville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Marvin (Doris) Toennies, Al “Phonso” (Kay) Toennies, Bernice “Mech” Toennies, Darlene Toennies, Alice Toennies, and Angie Wobbe, all of Damiansville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to Darlene’s parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by her daughters, Ann (fiancé, John Whited) Toennies and Christine Netemeyer; granddaughter, Josie Walker; parents-in-law, Albert and Mary (nee Heimann) Toennies and Alphonse and Frances (nee Fuehne) Toennies; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Melvin Toennies, Alfred (Pat) Toennies, Dolores “Dot” (Chuck) Goestenkors, Albin “Bones” Toennies, Katie (Elmer) Loepker, Ray (Marilyn) Toennies, Jerome Toennies, and Louis Wobbe.
A 1967 graduate of Mater Dei Catholic High School, Darlene began her career as a switchboard operator at Scott Air Force Base and later owned and then worked as a secretary for Tom Toennies Electric. She was a dedicated member of St. Damian Catholic Church and Ladies Sodality, as well as the Damiansville Development Club.
Darlene will be remembered for her kind heart, her love of quilting, spending time at boothill clubhouse, playing euchre, doing puzzles and scrapbooks, and her passion for traveling and camping. Most of all, she cherished time spent with her family and friends. A proud Cardinals fan, she found joy in simple pleasures and brought warmth and laughter to all who knew her.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Damian Catholic Church in Damiansville with Fr. Matthew Elie presiding and Deacon Glenn Netemeyer assisting. Interment will follow at St. Damian Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 28, 2025, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Germantown and again Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 8:00 – 9:45 a.m. at St. Damian Catholic Church in Damiansville.
In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials may be made to St. Damian Church or Mater Dei Catholic High School and will be received at the visitation or by mail, Moss Funeral Home, PO Box 117 Germantown, IL 62245, who is serving the family.
