    Dolores I. “Toots” Varel, age 83, of Bartelso passed away Monday, November 2, 2020 at HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon.

     

    She was born May 9, 1937 in Damiansville, the daughter of the late Clem and Sara, nee Linnemann, Santel.

     

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jerome Varel, whom she married June 21, 1960 at St. Damian Catholic Church in Damiansville and who died May 8, 2003; children, Carl Varel and Shirley Varel; siblings, Aloys “Ollie” Santel and Alfred “Shorty” Santel; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ralph Koopmann, Janet Santel, Paul “Pete” Varel, Jim Varel, Bernadette and Gerhard Kluemke, and Frank Goebel.

     

    Surviving are her children, Sharon (Leo) Schulte, Mike “Rex” Varel, Ben (Carla) Varel, Steve (Jill) Varel, Charlie Varel, Jeff “Lefty” Varel, Scott (Kathy) Varel, and Shelly (Todd) Winkeler all of Bartelso; grandchildren, Crystal (Mike Scott), Kyle (Maddison Suchomski), and Kolby Schulte, Casey (Josh) Harris, Candice (Justin Schulte) Varel, Paige (Zach Luebbers) Varel, Stacy (Tyler) Whitney, Julie (Jake) Endres, Nolan, Kirk, and Koltin Varel, Averi and Austin Winkeler; great-grandchildren, Corbin and Chloe Whitney, Aurelia Endres, and Rylee Harris; siblings, Robert “Smitty” (Ellarine) Santel, Bernadine Koopmann, and Diane (Gene) Masterson; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Esther Santel, Joan Varel, William (JoAnn) Varel, Betty Varel, Sally (Bernie) Gerdes, Margie (Jim) Wilken, Flossie (Frank) Schlautmann, and Blanche Goebel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

     

    Toots was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church and Altar Sodality in Bartelso and the Clinton County Farm Bureau. Along with raising ten children, Toots worked part-time as a cook at Bartelso Grade School and helped her husband Jerome with the Pioneer Seed Business. She enjoyed quilting and spending time with her family.

     

    Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, November 9, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Bartelso with Fr. James Buerster presiding. Interment will follow in St. Cecilia Cemetery, Bartelso. (masks are required at the funeral mass and will be limited to 100 family/guests)

     

    A drive-by visitation will be Sunday, November 8, 2020 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at St. Cecilia Cemetery in Bartelso.

     

    In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials may be made to the wishes of the family and will be received at the drive-by visitation or through Moss Funeral Home who is serving the family. (Please have checks made out to Shelly Winkeler)
