Don E. Lewis, age 77, of Jamestown, passed away at his home on Saturday, February 17, 2024. Born on December 31, 1946, in East St. Louis, he was the beloved son of the late Elner, nee Schroeder, Haines, and Don E. Lewis, Sr.
Don's journey through life was marked by resilience, dedication, and a profound commitment to service. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, he served as an Air Traffic Controller from 1967 to 1970. Following his graduation from E. St. Louis High School in 1965 and his military service, he pursued his passion for photography and earned a bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Don dedicated his entire career to capturing moments through the lens, leaving an indelible mark as a photographer for the university. Notably, he authored a two-volume set titled "Backyard Tigers," featuring captivating cat photography.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his step-father, Paul "Buddy" Haines, and step-brothers, Paul (Pam) Haines and James Haines. He is survived by his brother, Ron Lewis of Chesapeake, VA; nephews and nieces, Jimmie (Kellie) Haines of Marissa, Paul "Sam" (Angel) Haines of Waynesboro, TN, Angel Haines of O’Fallon, Tomi White of O’Fallon, and Buddy Joe Haines of Collinsville; great nephews and great-nieces; and cousins, Ray Geller of Belleville, Cindy Whaley of St. Peters, MO, Jimmy Gonzales and wife of St. Rose, Connie Calero and husband or White Bear Lake, MN, and Steve Schroeder and wife of White Bear Lake, MN.
Don's love for photography extended beyond his professional life; in his free time, he found joy in capturing the beauty of animals and landscapes. He also expressed his creativity through poetry, adding another dimension to his artistic soul.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no services held for Don and he will be interred at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.
