Dr. Raymond J. “Doc” Husmann, D.V.M., age 92, of Breese, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2024 at his home. He was born November 14, 1931 in Breese, a son of the late Nicholas and Catherine, nee Moss, Husmann.
In addition to his parents, Doc was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Steve Jacobs; brothers, Bernard (Trudy) Husmann and Alfred (Fay) Husmann; sisters, Elsie (Oscar) Oakley, Marcella (Ben) Poelker, and Loretta (Frank) Dreher; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Rose, nee Wilken, and John Vahlkamp, Sr.; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jack (Jane) Vahlkamp, Paul Fehrmann, Colette Vahlkamp, and Fred (Mary Jo) Vahlkamp.
Doc is survived by his wife Rose Mary, nee Vahlkamp, Husmann of Breese, whom he married December 29, 1956; children, Rich (Cathy Dissen) Husmann of Breese, Lynn (Floyd) Hollenkamp of Breese, Bob Husmann of Urbana, and Jean (the late Steve Jacobs) Husmann of Mahomet; grandchildren, John Hollenkamp of Fairview Heights, James (Amy) Hollenkamp of Grantfork, Jeff Hollenkamp of Plainville, MA, Chandler Husmann of Huntsville, AL, Allyssa (fiancé Montana Shrader) Hollenkamp of Lake St. Louis, MO, Nic (friend Kelsey Kempf) Hollenkamp of St. Louis, MO, and Kelsey Jacobs of Mahomet; great-grandchildren, Alice and Archer Hollenkamp, Lenore Hollenkamp, and Bryce Hollenkamp; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Willene Fehrmann of Highland, Vernon (Helen) Vahlkamp of Carlyle, Lillian (Jack) Fleckenstein of New Milford, CT, Mary Huwa of Wheat Ridge, CO, and Lee (Dan) Love of Albers; and numerous nieces and nephews.
After graduating from high school, Doc proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1954. Following his military service, he pursued his passion for animal care and graduated with a Doctorate Degree of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois in Champaign. This marked the beginning of a remarkable career dedicated to the health and well-being of animals.
Doc co-owned Veterinary Services LTD in Breese and tirelessly served his community until his retirement in 1996. His expertise, compassion, and unwavering commitment to animals earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike.
A man of deep faith, Doc was a devoted member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese. He was also actively involved in various professional organizations, including the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinarian Association, and the American Association of Bovine Practitioners. His contributions to the field of veterinary medicine were numerous, including his published work in the American Veterinary Medical Association on Diagnosing and Correcting faulty milking systems, RJ Husmann, May 15, 1977.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Doc found joy in simple pleasures. He had a passion for fishing, gardening, shelling pecans, and nurturing trees. His love for nature was evident in every aspect of his life, from the meticulous care of his garden to his expertise in planting and nurturing trees. Doc also cherished time spent with his family, creating cherished memories that will be treasured for generations to come.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese with Fr. James Buerster presiding and Deacon Linus Klostermann assisting. Interment will follow at St. Dominic/St. Augustine Cemetery in Breese.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 27, 2024 from 8:30-10:45 a.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese.
In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials may be made to Mater Dei Catholic High School or St. Dominic Church and will be received at the visitation or by mail, Moss Funeral Home, 535 N. 5th St. Breese, IL 62230, who is serving the family.
