Howard H. “Hod” Sweet, Jr., age 89 of New Baden, born April 10, 1927 in E. St. Louis, a son of the late Virginia, nee Stone, and Howard H. Sweet, Sr., died Saturday, April 30, 2016 at his residence.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Doris, nee Harper, Sweet, whom he married September 13, 1952 at St. Phillip’s Church in E. St. Louis and she died April 20, 2003; and a daughter, Virginia “Ginny” Zakszewski.
Surviving are his children, Howard H. “Dude” (Carol) Sweet, III of Columbia, Greg (Leslie) Sweet, Sr., of Excelsior Springs, MO, Barb (special friend Mike Lampe) LeBlanc of Trenton, and Beth (Don) Finn of New Baden; 11 grandchildren, Katie (Ryan) Henson, Jeff (Kristen) Sweet, Greg (Carol) Sweet, Jr., Tom (Sasha) Sweet, Tim (Teri) Sweet, Emily (Paul) Massey, Chris (fiancée Kryssy) Mollet, Jenna LeBlanc, Maggie, Annie, and Abby Finn; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Al Sweet of Bloomsdale, MO and Tom (Pat) Sweet of Plainview; and nieces and nephews.
Hod retired as a Building Products Sales Associate with Sears and also formerly worked at Famous-Barr. Prior to his sales jobs, he was a cabinet maker for Nelson-Deedle Cabinet Shop in Belleville and formerly owned the Illinois Cabinet Co. in Granite City. He enjoyed bowling, hand carving fishing lures, gardening, cooking and baking.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1953-1955 and a member of the New Baden American Legion Post 321.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. at the Moss Funeral Home in Trenton with Rev. Mike Rucker officiating, Interment will follow in Green Mount Cemetery in New Baden.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 7, 2016 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Moss Funeral Home in Trenton.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the New Baden American Legion Post 321 and will be received at the funeral home.
