Lavern H. Kuhl, age 92, of Breese, passed away Monday, December 2, 2024, at Breese Nursing Home. He was born May 19, 1932, in Beckemeyer, a son of the late William J. and Adeline (nee Detmer) Kuhl.
Lavern married Rose M. Kuhl (nee Santel) on August 18, 1954, at St. Damian Catholic Church in Damiansville and she survives in Breese. In addition to his wife, Lavern is survived by his children, Kathy (Ron) Venhaus of Breese, Sue (Deacon Linus) Klostermann of Breese, Ralph (Marietta) Kuhl of Breese, Jim (Cooky) Kuhl of Breese, Ruth (Mark) Rainey of Carlyle, and Carl (Melissa) Kuhl of Germantown; grandchildren, Joy (Michael) Boresi, Nick (Larissa) Venhaus, Barb (Steve) Smith, Tom (Becky) Klostermann, Debbie (Ben) Deiters, Phil (Lindsay) Klostermann, Alicia (Dan) Hauer, Courtney (Christian Koebel) Kuhl, Alex (Melissa) Kuhl, Sarah (Jupiter) Angulo, Jacob (Alexis) Kuhl, Bryan (Melissa) Rainey, Jon (Bailey) Rainey, Elise (Trevor) Alexander, Makenna (Blake) Straubinger, Sam (special friend, Riley Fisher) Kuhl, and Bradyn Kuhl; twenty great-grandchildren and was joyfully anticipating the birth of two more; siblings, Lucille Trame of Beckemeyer, Pauline Wilke of Aviston, William (Glenda) Kuhl of Topeka, KS, and Rita Schlarmann of Trenton; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Pat Kuhl of Carlyle and Dorothy (Don) Bollmeier of Marissa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Lavern was preceded in death by his great-grandchild, Corynn Boresi; brothers, Aloys “Bud” (Nell) Kuhl and Gene Kuhl; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ben and Frances (nee Grapperhaus) Santel; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Henry Trame, Vince Wilke, Rita (Norman “Pete”) Taylor, Sylvia (Wayne) Hyde, and Viola (Virgil) Hemker.
A veteran of the United States Army, Lavern served with honor from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. He worked at Hunter Packing Co. in East St. Louis for 30 years as a meat cutter and on the loading dock. Following his retirement, he worked as a custodian for many years at St. Augustine Parish.
Lavern was deeply devoted to his faith and community. He was a longtime member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Breese, where he served as a Trustee, and past president of the Holy Name Sodality. His community service extended to the Breese American Legion Post 252, Camp Ondessonk Volunteer, St. Dominic-St. Augustine Cemetery Board, and formerly the Mater Dei Catholic High School Board.
A true outdoorsman, Lavern loved going to the clubhouse, fishing, 4-wheeling, sitting by a good campfire, and enjoying the simple pleasures of nature. He also had a knack for repairing small engines and household items. Above all, his greatest joy was found in the company of his family, who will miss him dearly.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, December 6, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Breese with Fr. Patrick Peter presiding and Deacon Jay Fowler assisting. Interment will follow at St. Dominic-St. Augustine Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday, December 5, 2024, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. and again Friday, December 6, 2024, from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. at Moss Funeral Home in Breese.
In lieu of flowers, plants, and other gifts, memorials may be made to St. Augustine Parish, Mater Dei Catholic High School, Camp Ondessonk, or charity of donor’s choice and will be received at the visitation or by mail, Moss Funeral Home, 535 N. 5th St. Breese, IL 62230, who is serving the family.
