  • Full Obituary

Leonard J. "Len" Steinmann, age 88, of St. Rose, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Born on September 3, 1935, in St. Rose, Len was the son of the late Anton and Helena (née Koerkenmeier) Steinmann.

Len is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Joyce (née Wellen) Steinmann, whom he married on June 27, 1968, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Aviston. Len was the cherished father of Tom (Lori) Rakers of Chester, Chris (Tim) Hanke of Carlyle, Mark (Renee) Steinmann of St. Rose, and Becky (Mike) Henrichs of St. Rose. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Michelle Rakers, Mitchell (fiancée, Kayla Hislope) Rakers, Zach (fiancée, Nichole Wiedwilt) Rakers, Nicole (Ben) Goolsby, Lucas (Vanessa) Hanke, Michaela and Jacob Steinmann, and Lilly, Danica, Eli, and Camden Henrichs.

Len is also survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dennis (Joan) Wellen of Trenton, Butch (Ag) Wellen of Highland, Pat (special friend, Curtis) Hustedde of Highland, Tony (Rosanne) Wellen of Aviston, and Rick (Alice) Wellen of Aviston, along with many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Len was preceded in death by his siblings, Regina (Joe) Tebbe, Frank (Ann) Steinmann, Veronica Steinmann, Dorothy (Ray) Korte, Ed (Regina) Steinmann, and Loretta (Wib) Koch, as well as his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Anthony and Bertha (née Netemeyer) Wellen.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Len was a lifelong farmer who dedicated himself to raising dairy and beef cows, pigs, and grain. His love for the land was reflected in every aspect of his life. Len was the former president of Breese Clinton County Mutual Insurance and worked in agriculture as a Pioneer Seed salesman. His dedication to his community was evident in his many roles, including his service as a volunteer firefighter and Fire District Treasurer. Len was also a devoted member of St. Rose Catholic Church, the Men’s Sodality, and the St. Rose Development Club.

Len’s passion for farming was unparalleled, and he found joy in the simple pleasures of life—fishing, sharing conversations with friends, and enjoying rides around the farm on his Gator.
