  • Full Obituary

Richard A. "Rick" Nelson, SSgt United States Air Force (Ret.), age 68, of New Baden and formerly of Breese, passed away at his home on Friday, February 14, 2025.

Rick was born on September 6, 1956, in Red Bluff, CA, the son of the late John Richard and Charlene (née Duke) Nelson. He married Kathleen (née Heffron) Nelson on November 11, 1977, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Breese. She preceded him in death on March 13, 2006.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Rick was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roger and Mary (née Bolk) Heffron.

Rick is survived by his son, David (Erin) Nelson of Aviston; his cherished grandchildren, Jaxon and Ava Nelson; his brothers, Roger (Sheila) Nelson of Piqua, OH, and Russell Nelson of Corning, CA; and his in-laws, Mark (Mary) Heffron of Trenton and Marsha (George "Mike") Ward of Colorado Springs, CO.

A 1974 graduate of RBUHS in California, Rick dedicated 22 years of service to his country in the United States Air Force as a Turbo Shaft/Prop Jet Engine Mechanic. Following his military career, he worked as an over-the-road truck driver for PAM Transport from 1997 to 2006. A passionate St. Louis Cardinals fan, Rick found great joy in baseball and, above all, in spending time with his family—especially supporting his grandchildren in their sporting events.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Moss Funeral Home in Breese, with Fr. William Hitpas officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at St. Dominic/St. Augustine Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Moss Funeral Home in Breese.
